Sensei Nathan Hughes BLACK BELT - 2nd Dan

I started training in the Goshinkwai style under Alun in the early part of 2003. It was more for my wife to learn as I didn’t want her to be in a position where she couldn’t defend herself if on her own.
It was just by chance we were at Risca Leisure Centre the day Alun was taking his weekly class. After persuading her to try it there & then we were both hooked. Her confidence grew (which was pleasing) & we trained every week.
My main training was boxing (which I still do) & having done it since I was 16 it complimented the Goshinkwai style very well.
My boxing experience helps a lot when we do pad work e.g. holding them correctly & coming up with different combinations. I have never had any bouts in boxing but I trained hard & played rugby, getting injured a lot !!
By mid 2004 I had work commitments, injuries, planning our wedding amongst other things & our training just faded out. When we stopped training we had both got yellow belts (5th kyu).
I started back Jan 2007 with my brother in law who was interested in learning a martial art. My wife didn’t start back as we just had our 1st child but she still, when things are sorted, wants to get back into training!!
I got back into the swing of things & by the end of the year I had got my blue belt (2nd kyu).
The system is really effective & a great way to stay in shape. The extra monthly trainings sessions & seminars are a big help as well.
In March 2008 our 2nd child was born & in October I got my brown belt (1st kyu), then in October 2009 all my hard work paid off as I attained my black belt (Shodan).
November 2011 we had our annual seminar with guest Instructors Sensei Martin Dixon (Chairman of BJJAGB) his wife Sensei Sheila Dixon & Sensei Paul Thomas (Close Quarter Systems). I was awarded my 2nd Dan (Nidan). Also in 2011 myself & some of the others did our bit for Movember..

Instructors comments:
Nathan’s enthusiasm for the training is infectious. He puts so much thought and practice into his weekly training, the additional 3hr seminars every month and his gradings - a true inspiration for his colleagues!
